4 Quick Tips to Help Seniors Start Their Morning On the Right Foot
Mornings can be tough for a lot of folks, regardless of their age. We all know that feeling when the alarm goes off but the bed is too comfortable to leave. Mornings are very important, though, as they do set the tone for how the rest of the day goes. So if it begins chaotic or in a bit of a flurry, it’s only to be expected to fall apart from there.
So how can seniors especially make sure they are starting their day off on the right foot? Our assisted living in Palm Springs has a few tips that could help.
1.) Eat a breakfast that suits your needs.
Many have heard the age old marketing slogan that ‘breakfast is the most important meal of the day’. While this is true for developing brains, such as that of young children, into adulthood, breakfast isn’t any more important than any other meal. Choose a breakfast that suits your needs! This could be a full spread, such as eggs, bacon, and sliced fruit. Or it could simply be a granola bar and an orange. Just make sure you eat something healthy to sustain you until lunch!
2.) Make time for meditation and reflection.
Many tend to misunderstand the concept of meditation and chalk it up gurus or weekend retreats spent up in the mountains. While this is all well and good, it isn’t practical for the day to day. Meditation can happen anywhere, as it is simply the act of clearing your mind and focusing on the things you’re grateful for. Even five or ten minutes spent meditating each morning can put you in the right mindset for the rest of the day. Take a quick walk around the neighborhood and re-center. Either way, this sort of mindfulness is a must to begin your day properly.
3.) Keep a journal.
For seniors living in assisted living in Palm Springs, another great way to start the day is by journaling. While some opt to journal before bed, journaling in the morning can help provide some perspective on the day before it even begins. Write about what you dreamt about, what some of the lingering thoughts were before you fell asleep, goals that you hope to accomplish that day — anything and everything. There is no wrong answer. Note that journaling doesn’t need to include massive essays. Even a few notes or bullet points can go a long way.
4.) Skip out on the snooze button.
There are few greater temptations known to mankind than the snooze button. While it can feel so alluring, the prospect of just a few more minutes, do your best to get up the first time that it sounds. Getting up at the same time every day can actually help to improve your memory and focus as well bring proper calibration to your circadian rhythm. This means that you will not only wake up easier each day, but fall asleep quicker during the night, giving you more energy during the day.
